The state of depriving female of their rights and torturing
them physically and mentally is female violence. It has
become a burning issue in Nepal these days.
Following the trend of patriarchy the society has been
humiliating the women. Such women in many rural
areas are treated very badly. They are still compelled to
be confined to the four walls of the house. The things
provided to them are just the household chores and rearing
of children. They are not allowed to get into the outside
world and interact with the fresh world. This act was
somehow tolerable because even the same women who
were humiliated had no guts to speak. But these days the
condition has become worse. Humiliation has risen to such
an extent that it is beyond endurance.
Recently many rape cases have been alarmingly reported.
Every day we hear about gang rapes and above all. the
death of the innocent individuals at the termination point.
This is mainly because of men who think of themselves
to be superior. Be it the bus or any public place, girls or
women are not safe at all. Superstition also has played a
vital role in influencing female violence. Time and often
we can hear about humiliation on the women
blaming them for witchcraft. They are not only scolded
but also given severe punishment.
Marriage system that is prevalent in Nepal is defective.
Marriage is thwarted if dowry is not offered to the
bridegroom's family. Even if marriage takes place, the
newly married female member is tortured physically and
mentally by the in-laws.
Girls or women are being trafficked and sold to especially
Indian brothels daily. There is no one to listen to their
heart-rending cries.
That is why now it is getting late. Still there is time for
us to work collectively. The government, the INGO's. the
NGO's and we individuals have to raise the voice against
female violence and emancipate from this
injustice. Hope we will be successful in the near future.
For how long is this kind of system supposed to continue?
No one can easily answer this question. The steps
by the government are not enough for this, So let's work
on it.
